The State Tretyakov Gallery
Moscow

Known as the world’s premier repository of Russian fine art, housing a legendary collection of over 180,000 works spanning eleven centuries of national creative history. Founded in 1856 by merchant Pavel Tretyakov, who gifted his private collection to the city in 1892, the museum is globally renowned for its definitive collection of Russian masterpieces—ranging from pre-Mongol religious icons to the bold strokes of the early 20th-century avant-garde.
The Tretyakov management structure looks after multiple other sites, the most important of these being a second major gallery in Moscow and two remote satellite galleries.
The New Tretyakov Gallery presents a permanent exhibition of Russian art of the 20th century in all its diversity: avant-garde, socialistic realism and art of the “austere style” and “underground”—from 1910 to the 1990s.
Branches of the Tretyakov are based in Kaliningrad and Vladivostok.
